According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2.1 million people had an opioid use disorder in 2016. With its safety reassured by pharmaceutical companies in the late 1990s, doctors began prescribing opioids at an alarming rate. It wasn’t until 2017 that the HHS declared the Opioid Crisis a public health emergency. By that time, individuals, families, and communities of all kinds had been devastated. Today, many users have turned to street drugs like heroin to fight the painful and often deadly withdrawal symptoms caused by these medications’ discontinuation.
